Library and Information Science Policy
Long awaited Library and Information Service Policy has now been presented to the Social Committee of the Prime Minister’s Office on 27 June 2007.The proposal was okayed by the minister for Education and Sports on 28 May 2007. The proposal was presented by the Secretary, Ministry of Education and Sports Mr. Balananda Paudel and Chief Librarian Mr. Dasharath Thapa.

The Policy document after the necessary modification will be passed by the cabinet in the days to come. The Secretary to the Cabinet Secretariat Mr. Narayan Silwal and Mr. Madhav Paudel will finally make necessary editing.

Prior to this on 3 January 2007 on the 51st anniversary of NNL, a one day discussion on the draft was organised. The participants of the discussion programme were librarians, publishers and other related parties. The discussion brought out some modifications on the draft.

After incorporating the suggestions of the discussion, Mr. Dasharath Thapa, Chief of NNL and Chairman of Library Policy draft Committed handed over the draft of “National policy on library and information service 2007 on4 January 2007 to the then Minister for Education and Sports Mr. Mangal Siddhi Manandhar.

Mr. Dasharath Thapa, Chairman of the committee hoped that the proposed policy would be able to uplift the existing situation of libraries and help in the development of well managed information society. Mr. Thapa added that much more effort has been done in the field of education to increase the literacy rate and in turn to improve the life style of Nepalese people.

Mr. Krishna Mani Bhandari, member of the committee and Chief of Tribhuvan University Central Library, expressed his hope of proper implementation of right to information and hoped that the policy would be able to create friendly environment among the local level people.

Mr. Bhola Kumar Shrestha, President of Nepal Library Association and Chief of Kesar Library expressed his hope that the policy would be able to solve the barriers of library development and also pointed out the problems being faced by the libraries in absence of such policy.

Sc. of the Central Department of Library and Information Science, Tribhuvan University has been nominated as a member of Interim Legislative Parliament representing Nepal peasants workers party.
